It is a large enough number to inspire skepticism, disbelief, and outrage. To this day, decades after the fact, there are still those who deny that any of it ever happened because the numbers are just too big. It is better to think of this tragedy in more personal terms: as in 1.1 million families physically ripped apart, 1.1 million dreams snuffed out, and untold numbers of survivors left scared forever. Human faces need to be attached to the raw numbers, or else the numbers become a point of data, something which can be spun to serve up moral or political advantage in today s society.
